Have i found the secret to retaining moisture 🙊 ?

Hello everyone, I hope you are all doing well!
Sorry I’ve been away for so long but my post graduate degree has taken up a lot of my time.
Ok so lets get to it.
For the past month i introduced some new products into my hair care regimen and paired it with some of my old ones. The result has been amazing as my hair stays super soft, moisturised and i’ve noticed less breakage.
These products are:

  • Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen, grow and restore leave-in conditioner [£10.99]. This product contains all the good stuff like; Shea butter, peppermint, keratin, JBCO, glycerin, jojoba oil, H2O and many more.

20180408_1307091360622353.jpg

  • Ultimate organic therapy tea tree stimulating growth oil [£2.99]. If you have an itchy scalp i would highly recommend this oil as it has helped with my scalp and leaves it feeling moisturised.

20180408_1306271873919433.jpg

  • Ultimate organic therapy extra virgin olive oil stimulating growth oil [£2.99]. This product is a gem. It makes my hair SO soft i am not even joking. It is perfect for a hot oil treatment and it made my detangling process very easy.

20180408_1305531394185652.jpg

  • Ultimate organic therapy Jamaican black castor stimulating growth oil [£2.99]. I’m in love with this line and I think it might be making my hair thicker 🤔 or maybe it’s my change in diet. Hmmm

20180408_1305411664779129.jpg

  • Shea Moisture coconut & hibiscus curl & shine style milk [£9.99]. This product works wonderfully with my 4b/4c hair type. This has coconut oil, silk protein, neem oil, H2O, glycerin, Shea butter, carrot oil, etc. Even after 4 days majority of my curls are still defined and clumped together. This product is very thick so use lightly.

20180408_130619335985992.jpg
Now the secret is to use these products on wet/damp hair for best results and lasting moisture retention.
With these products, i have found that the LCO [leave-in conditioner, cream & oil) method works best for me. To finish off, I apply a little mixture of the tea tree & castor oil to my scalp.
A detailed description of how i use these products will be in my Updated wash day routine so click here to check it out.
Let me know if you’ve tried any of these products and if they work for you too.
Have a great day & see you next time.

Updated wash day routine for maximum moisture retention.

Hope you’re all having a good day!

I’ve made a few changes to my wash day routine and my hair has been thanking me for it. It’s softer and I’ve noticed more curl definition.

The night before i wash my hair, i use my ultimate organic therapy extra virgin olive oil on my hair and massage it onto my scalp. This makes the start of my wash day slightly easier so i do it.

20180408_1305531394185652.jpg

First, i part my hair into 4 sections & i use my Shea moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen and restore shampoo. This contains shea butter, peppermint, JBCO & Apple cider vinegar. Oh and this is my second bottle, because I really love this shampoo.

20180408_1306481043674927.jpg

To avoid stripping my hair completely of its oils, i use an applicator bottle containing a mixture of the shampoo diluted in water, to get to my scalp easily. This method has really changed the way my hair feels after a wash.

Second, i go in with my Shea moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen and restore conditioner on each section whilst finger detangling at the same time, and i finish off by running a comb through those sections to fully detangle my hair. Cover with a shower cap or heat process cap.

(After this step i will deep condition my hair with my staple product, ORS hair mayonnaise. This is done once every 2/3 weeks)

20180408_130529489869797.jpg

Third, while my hair is still dripping wet, i apply my Shea moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen, grow and restore leave-in conditioner on one section at a time. Followed by my Shea moisture coconut and hibiscus curl and shine style milk,

and finally, i use my ultimate organic therapy tea tree & Jamaican black castor stimulating growth oil on my scalp and hair to lock all the moisture in and add shine.

This method leaves my hair soft, moisturised and healthy. This is what works for me but you are all welcome to try this method (with your own products).

Below is a twist-out i did using this method.

Have a great day and see you next time.

DIY whipped Shea, mango & cupuacu butter for hair.

PS. this post is long because i had to redo the whipped butter. Keep reading to find out.

Ok so we all know how Shea butter is brilliant for your hair especially during the winter. And because I intend on wearing my own hair out and not braiding (with extensions), I thought I’ll have to take extra care of it.

So what motivated me.

As always I did my research and found that a lot of “Naturals” with thick long healthy hair had their own natural products mix. So I decided to do mine. Plus I have used shea butter on my hair in the past and love it. So instead of using store bought hair products, I’ll be using my own mix.

My favourite herbal teas 🍵

Hello friends 😃

I love trying out new things, new foods, places and anything to help maintain my well-being.

I’ve always been a fan of the camomile tea but I’ve introduced two more herbal teas to my life.

Here are my 3 favourite herbal teas;

They all have natural ingredients so it’s full of the good stuff 😃💕.

Pure Camomile🌼

This tea makes me feel so relaxed and helps me sleep. It’s a long time favourite 😊.

Pure Peppermint🌿

This is my go to Tea for when I need a kick. It gets me going and it’s so tingly lol. It’s great to just inhale the steam while it’s brewing. It has a strong taste at first, but with every sip it gets better.

Lemon Trio🍋

This is my new favourite 💕. It makes me feel good. It tastes wonderful. Tastes and smells of lemon. If you’ve ever smelt lemon grass you’ll love this tea. It’s just divine.
I like to have one tea bag a day of each brand of tea.

I also like to brew my tea for up to 5 – 7 minutes for a stronger taste.

Let me know if you have tried any of these teas and drop your suggestions of what other herbal tea you think I should try.

Have a lovely day everyone 💚.

Being a natural on a budget

Hello friends, i hope you’re having a great week!

I’ve had so many people tell me that the reason why they haven’t returned to their natural hair is because the products are too expensive. But today i will share with you some affordable under £10 / $10 / NGN 5000 products that i and my mother use on our natural hair.

To get the most out of a product, always follow the instructions written on it.

Before you head out to buy hair products, always do your research.

Shampoo.

If you need products to get rid of that build up off your hair and scalp, then is for you. A little goes a long way with these, and they lather quickly.

  1. Garnier ultimate blends shampoo; the nourishing repairer: this is perfect for my hair during the very hot weather.
  2. Amla legend rejuvenating ritual moisture remedy shampoo.
  3. ORS olive oil creamy aloe shampoo.

Conditioner.

These are great conditioners that provide slip and smell great.

  1. ORS olive oil replenishing conditioner: if you need a product to help you comb your type 4 hair with a fine tooth comb then this is it.
  2. Amla legend rejuvenating ritual body filler hair cream conditioner.
  3. Garnier ultimate blends conditioner; the nourishing repairer: this goes perfectly with its shampoo.
  4. Cantu Shea butter moisturising rinse out conditioner.
  5. Profectiv mega growth detangling conditioner: i used this when i was transitioning and it really helped. Plus its shampoo is very tingly on the scalp.

Deep conditioner.

These are the only deep conditioners i use and love and will forever stick to because they work. They smell okay. They leave my hair soft and strong. I deep condition my hair every wash day now.

  1. Organics by Africa’s best hair mayonnaise
  2. ORS the original hair mayonnaise

Moisturiser.

These products are rich, creamy and smell great. This is how i use either of them; leave in conditioner on my damp hair, a moisturiser, and a sealant. They make my twists and braids look juicy.

  1. ORS hair repair intense moisture creme.
  2. Shea butter miracle moisture intense silky hair moisturiser.
  3. ORS olive oil creme hair dress; extra rich for dry thirsty hair.

Sealant.

Yes i use these products ha ha. I decided to go back to these products because these were the things my mother used on my hair and scalp when i was a child. Since i went back to it, i have noticed that my hair retains more moisture and breaks less, plus it defines my curls. I love them. I’ll write a more detailed post about them.

  1. Blue magic conditioner hair dress (the original).
  2. Dax pomade.

Styling products.

These products provide great hold and will define your styles and keep them for 2 to 3 days.

  1. Cantu Shea butter for natural hair coconut oil shine and hold mist.
  2. ORS olive oil 12 in 1 style defining creme gel: it has a strong smell but works so well.
  3. Cantu Shea butter for natural extreme hold styling stay glue: its quite sticky but does not flake. It does feel a bit crunchy when dry but defines my curls.

Edge control.

These products provide good hold, but if you’re looking for that 24 hour hold then this isn’t it. I cycle a lot and when it sweat, it lifts some of my hair up but my edges still look nice. I’m really not bothered about not having sleek looking edges anyway. They wont flake unless you use a lot (esp the Eco styler).

  1. Murray’s edge wax extreme hold.
  2. ORS monoi oil anti breakage edge control hair gel.
  3. Eco styler sport.

Accessories & Tools.

  1. Get hair bands/ties that are snag proof and don’t have any metal class on them.
  2. If you are like me and you love simplifying things, then get hair clips. They are great for sectioning your hair.
  3. Soft boar bristle brush: if you’re not too bothered about have super sleek styles/edges, then get one of these. It still gets the job done to me.
  4. We all need a wide tooth comb to detangle our hair with. I always finger detangle first.

And lastly;

For growth & preventing dry scalp.

Virgin hair fertilizer. Does it work? YES it works for me. It has made my edges thicker. It is very tingly on the scalp and before i use it, i slightly spritz my scalp with water. If you decide to get one, get the one with the red cap and not the yellow cap (this is said to be the fake one), it should also have an expiry date.

I hope your journey becomes fun, if it isn’t already.

Have a good one and i will see you next time.

How to maintain and grow thick, strong, long hair.

Hello everyone 😃. How are you all doing?

I recently posted my current hair state on Snapchat and got so many questions. From transitioning, to how I grow my hair. My hair journey so far has been fun, adventurous and full of new discoveries . So I want to share with you all, my tips on how to grow healthy, thick, long hair. My hair is below collar bone length and I can’t wait for it to get much longer, Yaaayy.

This post should answer all the questions I have received and I hope that you’ll benefit from it.

PS. These are the things I do and have done in the past to help my hair. It’s basically all about trial and error. Learn to discover what works for your hair type. I have changed a lot of the routines i started with when i first went natural and that is because now, i have learnt how to take care of my hair and i know what it needs. So my routine is way shorter and quicker.

Transitioning

Transitioning as opposed to the big chop is when you allow the new growth to sprout and you still have your relaxed hair attached because you still want the length or you’re just not sure how you’ll look with a very short Afro.

I transitioned, and it was not the most pleasant experience ever. It was hard to maintain both textures (curly & straight). I had to do styles like Bantu knots or flexi rod sets to try to blend both textures but it never lasted for more than 2 days.

What I recommend

  • Invest in a good leave in conditioner as this will make combing easier
  • Always comb from the bottom upwards as this will reduce breakage
  • Always use a wide tooth comb
  • If you are like me and both textures start driving you crazy, embrace it and cut off the relaxed ends using a hair trimming scissors.
  • Wear protective styles. For example, I wore a lot of box braids whilst transitioning. But you never want to leave a style in for more than  months.
  • Deep conditioners are your friends. It’ll help with moisture and manageability.

Afro in puffs

If you’re at this stage, you’ve fully embraced your curls and are rocking your Afro. But I’m always asked on what do I use to grow my hair. Well here are the things I do;

  • I stay away from heat as much as possible. The last time I flat ironed my hair was in 2016 and I’ve decided that the health of my hair is better than damaging it. So no more heat for at least 2 years.
  • I trim the ends of my hair at least twice a year. One at the beginning of the year and another at the end. I also make sure to use scissors specifically designed for hair cutting.
  • I finger detangle my hair for knots before I use a comb.
  • I stopped wearing weaves.
  • I recently just bought a wig which I’ll wear once in a while but prior to this moment, I never wore wigs.
  • I stopped going to the salon, instead i decided to learn about my hair and style/braid it myself.
  • I stopped using shampoos with sulfur in them. Instead, I have invested in shampoos and conditioners designed for natural hair.
  • I give myself scalp massages at least twice a week, and these last for 2 minutes or at most 4 minutes.
  • I use growth oils. I have in a bottle a mixture of peppermint oil, rosemary oil, jojoba oil and Jamaican extra dark castor, wild growth oils (the white and the yellow bottle), essential 17 (by Alikay naturals). All these oils are pre-mixed by me and in a plastic bottle. To use I boil some water and pour in a bowl. Then I put the bottle in the hot water to heat up. When it has cooled down a bit, I shake it and pour a little bit on my palm. Then I use my finger tips to distribute it around my scalp and massage. And this has definitely helped with my hair growth.
  • I take Silica complex vitamins. This contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, skin & nails. It contains calcium, magnesium, zinc, boron, horsetail extract, and many more. I believe it works because I’ve been taking it for a year now and have seen some general improvements in the areas it targets.

20170706_130211

  • I make sure my protective styles are not too tight and are not pulling at my edges.
  • I wash my hair at least once a week.
  • I don’t use brushes to comb through my hair and for my edges I use a soft boar bristle brush. Use the proper hair tools for your hair type.
  • I try to maintain a healthy diet and exercise. Don’t forget to drink a lot of water.
  • I moisturise my hair a lot focusing on my ends as they are very fragile.
  • My hair loves water. So sometimes, I hop into the shower without a shower cap and let the steam do get my hair moist. Or if i have braids in, I spritz it with water every morning.
  • My hair is pretty much always in either twists or braids so I don’t play with it too much.
  • PATIENCE

That’s it. That is how I have managed to maintain the health of my hair and it’s length.

If you have any more questions, don’t hesitate to ask them 😃.

As always, have a lovely day and I will see you next time 💙.

My current hair care favourites

Hello friends, how are you all doing?

I want to share with you all, products that have kicked my old hair products to the curb and these new ones are helping my hair thrive way better. So I intend on sticking to them.

These products cater to kinky hair and that is my hair type so they are just perfect.

  • Shea Moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen, grow and restore shampoo: nice strong smell and a little goes a long way. It definitely leaves my hair feeling very clean and strong. I do not follow up with a conditioner because I use a leave in conditioner.

20170629_161246

  • Pantene truly natural Co-Wash cleansing conditioner: this has a really strong scent but it does leave my hair feeling moisturised and soft. I won’t recommend it for removing build up on your hair and scalp, but it cleans it lightly without stripping any oils.

20170629_161457

  • Alikay Naturals Lemongrass leave in conditioner: if you are transitioning or are already natural, and you need a leave in, look no further. This product smells so divine and makes my hair feel super soft, moisturised and manageable. It contains silk amino protein, aloe vera & lemongrass oil.

20170629_162036

  • Alikay Naturals Shea yogurt hair moisturiser: it melts into an oil when rubbed in between your palms and it keeps the hair nice and healthy whilst reducing breakage and split ends.
  • Alikay Naturals Avocado cream moisture repairing mask: this product made my hair smell so good and fresh. I love it.
  • ORS 12 – n – 1 style defining cream: I have talked about this product a lot on Snapchat because it definitely defines your hairstyles. It has avocado oil to help with conditioning and ma king it easy to work with your hair as you style it.

20170629_161602

  • Alikay Naturals Essential 17 hair growth oil: this contains the necessary oils to help promote healthy, strong, thick hair. It has emu oil, rosemary, olive, jojoba, sweet almond, tea tree, horsetail powder, peppermint, etc. You can really feel it tingle after using it to massage your scalp.

20170629_162104

  • Murray’s EdgeWax extreme hold: this in my opinion works way better that any of the ors or creme of nature edge controls. It does not flake. When I apply it on my edges, I use a soft boar bristle brush to comb it down and I tie down my edges with a scarf. This method helps set the edge control and makes it last.

Well it’s safe to say that Alikay Naturals is my new favourite natural hair care brand and I can’t wait to get more of their products.

Let me know if you’ve tried any of the products listed 😃 or the brand.

Do have a lovely day 💕.

Velvet turbans|A simple way to protect your hair and look chic.💁🏽

Hello friends, I hope you are all doing well!

Now if you’re anything like me and you don’t like dealing with your hair on a day to day basis, then this is definitely for you.

Recently, I’ve been into the head-wrap / turban fashion, and I’ve incorporated these items into my daily life. These turbans come in various colours and luckily for me, my mother sells them in her clothing shop. So it’s easy for me to buy them. These turbans come in different styles:

1) the turban with two tails & is bigger (NGN 3500).

2) the turban with one tail & is smaller (NGN 2500).

I currently have my hair in single braids and so, tying head-wraps and scarves has become easier and my favourite thing.

Below are different ways you can style a velvet turban, enjoy!

  • Simply place the turban on your head and with a twisting motion, make a low bun at the back of your head.
  • Wear turban and make a huge bun at the top of your head

20170627_150237

  • Take a small fabric (could be a t shirt/top), and make it into a donut or circle. Place this inside your turban and wear the turban. Begin wrapping the tail of the turban around that makeshift bun in your turban and secure it. This works best with the smaller turban to make it look fuller.
  • Wrap tail around continuously and secure.
  • Wear turban and twist both tails around your head and secure into a fold.

And there you have it, quick, easy, pretty styles you can rock any day, anywhere.

Hope you enjoyed this post

Have a great week and i will see you next time.

My Ulta and Sephora haul contd.

Hello friends, welcome to the continuation of my previous post ” My Ulta and Sephora haul” click here if you haven’t checked it out yet 💚.

This post unlike the previous one contains slightly cheaper products but still of beautiful quality.

My Ulta haul;

  • Buxom eye shadow in the shade ‘IT Crowd’ ($12): ok so prior to purchasing this product I had never heard of it, but I’m glad I discovered it. This eye shadow is so pigmented and beautiful it makes my heart melt, ha ha. It’s a nice orange shimmery colour and I cannot wait to create a look with this.
  • NYX prismatic shadows in the shade ‘Glided doré’ or ps22 ($5.99): first off the packaging is so cute. It’s got a little bow where you open it from. Onto the shadow, it is a beautiful gold shade. Nice and pigmented too (yes I say pigmented a lot because I don’t like going for eyeshadow that won’t pop) haha.
  • NYX Dewy and Matte finish setting sprays ($7.99 each): I got the matte finish for the summer and the dewy finish for the winter.people I kid you not when I say that the matte finish (which is the one I’ve used so far out of the two) is way better that the Urban decay All nighter setting spray. This baby held my makeup on for at least 7 hours (because I took my makeup off after the 7th hour. I won’t be surprised if it lasts longer. Can’t wait to try out the dewy finish during the winter.
  • NYX soft matte lip cream in the shade 02 ($5.99): it’s a lovely nude colour and smells nice.

20170618_153109

  • LÓRÉAL Paris Infalliable pro-glow foundation in the shades ‘209 (caramel beige) & 210 (classic tan)’ ($12.99 each): I got these two shades because mixing both of them will give me a perfect match, and I can always use the lighter one in the winter or the darker one when I get a massive tan. Plus it’s got SPF 15, sweet.
20170621_152017
top – 209 bottom – 210
  • NYX liquid suede cream lipstick ($6.99): I got it in the shade ‘Alien’ or 24. It’s a black shade with a tint of blue 🖤😍 and I can’t wait to use it.

  • NYX White liquid liner ($6.99): My search for a white eyeliner has ended. I love the NYX liquid liners and did not hesitate to grad this white liner. Makeup looks coming soon 😜🤡.

My Ulta and Sephora haul

Hello friends, so sorry I’ve been away for a while now but yaayy i’m back.

PS. because of how long this post will be, i have divided it into two parts. So please do click HERE (after you’re done with this post ;))to go to the second part which is the Ulta haul. Thank you.

So i recently went to Maryland in the united states of america for my cousins wedding/holiday and i had a swell time shopping and sightseeing and spending time with my relatives.

Now as most of you know, i live in both Nigeria and England, and unfortunately there are no Ulta and Sephora stores in these places, which means that some of the products are not available in these countries but are available in America. This is why i decided to pay a visit to these two makeup/beauty stores. I also learnt very quickly which store had more affordable products vs more expensive products.

My trip to Sephora.

On social media, i have heard a lot of people bash Sephora employees for their lack of customer service and their attitude, but this was not what i experienced. In fact, people were quick to help me make decisions and took their time out to help me.

Now onto the products i bought;

  • Laura mercier deluxe mini translucent loose setting powder ($23): I got the mini version because it was my first time trying it and it just seemed reasonable that i start off with a smaller size. It also came with a mini velour puff. Now i tried this product for the first time on my cousins wedding and i and not kidding when i say all the pictures that were taken came out great. There were no flash backs and it held my makeup in place. So yea i’m glad i got this.
  • Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance eye-shadow palette ($42): After seeing how beautiful this palette was on Instagram and YouTube videos, I just had to try it. Safe to say it was a win. Lovely shades and they are pigmented. One word ‘LOVE’.
  • Glam Glow supermud clearing treatment (mini version) ($22): people when I tell you that this product definitely lives up to its expectation I’m being very honest. It cleaned out my pores from just the first use. I have used it on 2 more occasions and will continue to use it when I feel my face needs a deep cleanse.
  • Glam Glow gravity firming treatment (mini version) ($22): now well I am very indifferent about this product. I don’t like how it’s a peel off mask but can’t really peel off evenly. Like it peels of in patches. I ended up washing the residue with warm water and didn’t really see any difference on my face. I’ll probably have to reluctantly try this again to see if it will by some miracle work. Will rate this a 6/10.
  • Sephora pro airbrush perfector #51 ($34): I’ll probably use this for applying my highlighter or for contouring. The bristles are nice and soft though.
  • NARS Radiant creamy concealer ($30): I got this in the shade medium/dark 2 caramel.
  • Benefit KA Brow cream-gel brow colour ($24): I love this product as it comes with an angled brush for precise application. I got the brown shade or #5.
  • Too Faced love light prismatic highlighter ($30): this product is so gorgeous 😍, from the packaging to the texture of the highlighter. It is buidable and will give you that perfect glow. I got mine in the shade 💛 you light up my life 💛.

Hope you enjoyed this post. Click My Ulta and Sephora haul contd.  to check out the continuation.

Have a lovely day and I will see you next time 👋🏼
